Lean hog futures were mixed on Thursday, with nearby Aug up 32.5 cents. The CME Lean Hog Index for 8/8 was 14 cents lower than the previous day at $85.62. The USDA pork carcass cutout value was 11 cents higher in the Thursday afternoon report, with a weighted average of $95.17. The national base hog carcass was down 48 cents to $78.50 in the a.m. report. FI hog slaughter was estimated at 1,713,000 head through Thursday, 39,000 head fewer than the previous week and down 28,000 from the same week in 2016. The USDA reported pork bookings of 18,912 MT in their weekly export sales report, with weekly pork shipments supportive at 17,300 MT. Exports are key to bleeding off rising production.
